Want to be an authority in your niche? Do these 3 things

It’s okay to start your writing as a jack-of-all-trades, but if you want to become an authority, you must find a niche, dig your heels in and pay the dues to be an authority.

Every writer wants to be recognized as a force in his niche. When we talk about African Literature, Chinua Achebe is a force to reckon with. Talk about horror, Stephen King is the man. Talk about feminism, oh yeah, we have our very own Chimamanda.N. Adichie. Talk about Motivation, we have Joyce Meyer, Brian Tracy, Sam Adeyemi, etc. How did they all do it, how did they rise to the clouds of their niche? The billion-dollar question!

There are three phases to achieving this authority status.

Consume information:

Here you consume as much information on your niche as possible. The materials, the strategies, who the audience is, the expectations, the skill and requirements, everything worth knowing. But, do not live in this phase forever in the belief that you’ve not acquired all there is to acquire because that time will never come.

Audience building:

Building a fan base is non-negotiable if you want to become an authority. Every successful person has raving fans. This phase comes with its challenges, but it’s not as tough as building a rocket to land on Mars. Winning an audience over through your writing is very simple but getting your work in their face is where the difficulty lies. It used to be VERY difficult back in the day when technology was still in its infancy, but it’s much easier now if you know how.

Social media is the new normal and if you can harness it, you’ll build a rich fan base- one that does not only love your work but are willing to contribute to it in every way. How then can you do this? By picking up that niche of yours and throwing content from it to your followers and friends on social media consistently. Give them a piece of you every day, engage them in conversations with intriguing questions and polls. Gift the very loyal ones, they will run their mouth in your favor. Remember, consistency is the key as people will forget you if you do not continually tell them who you are. Once you’ve built your fan base through social media, the next step is launch big time!

Become an author:

Yes, the quickest path to becoming an authority is publishing. You need to become an author. Publishing here starts from articles, guest posting on other great platforms, books, blogs, a personal website, the list goes on. By now, you already have an audience and you would find it easy to get your published works in their hands.

If you were indeed diligent with the two previous stages, then at this phase, you will begin to get opportunities and gigs that would bring you to the spotlight.

Again, consistency is paramount. So, there you have it!
